Hidden Gem Romance of the Week: Silent Surrender

There are some romance books where you read the premise and immediately know you're going to be in for a mess.

That was Silent Surrender for me.

You've got three sisters, a secret criminal underworld, a vigilante revenge operation, toxic relationships, a former homicide detective, a whole lot of baggage, and a romance that gets very complicated very quickly.

And somehow, this book has fewer than 300 ratings on Goodreads.

I gave Silent Surrender by Netra Antoinette 4 stars, and if you like your romantic suspense messy, toxic, and full of secrets, this is definitely one to check out.

The Story

Silent Surrender immediately opens with a dark prologue. We're introduced to Stormi when she's just 12 years old, and she kills her abusive stepfather.

More than a decade later, Stormi has built a completely different life on the surface. During the day, she works in community outreach. At night, she and her two sisters run a vigilante revenge operation targeting men who abuse women and children.

Stormi is committed to never falling in love or falling in love. But she does have a secret physical relationship with her best friend, Spencer.

Then she meets Niles.

Niles is a trainer and former homicide detective with a complicated past of his own. After the death of his girlfriend three years ago, he hasn't moved on emotionally. At the same time, he's involved in a secret physical relationship with his best friend's longtime girlfriend, who also happens to be his dead girlfriend's best friend.

So when Stormi and Niles meet, neither of them is exactly coming into the relationship without baggage.

Stormi tries to keep her distance and protect herself from developing feelings for Niles, but the connection between them becomes increasingly difficult to ignore.

And then Stormi discovers that Niles is connected to one of her targets.

Suddenly, the relationship she's been trying not to have becomes even more complicated—and Stormi has to figure out what to do when the man she's becoming attached to may be connected to the very world she's been trying to keep separate from her personal life.

A Dark Romantic Suspense With a Complicated Heroine

One of the things that makes Silent Surrender stand out is the combination of the romantic suspense storyline with Stormi's secret life.

During the day, she's working in community outreach. At night, she's part of a vigilante operation with her sisters, targeting men who have abused women and children.

That secret life becomes even more complicated once Niles enters the picture.

Niles has his own secrets and complicated relationships, and neither he nor Stormi is exactly looking for something serious when they meet. But the more time they spend together, the harder it becomes for Stormi to ignore what she's feeling.

And once she realizes Niles is connected to one of her targets, the stakes of their relationship change completely.

What I Loved

The premise. The combination of three sisters, a secret vigilante operation, romantic suspense, and a complicated romance makes this a pretty unique setup.

Stormi. She's a strong, capable heroine, but her past is a huge part of her character. The story gives you a lot of context for why she is the way she is and why she has such a hard time letting people get close to her.

The sister dynamic. Stormi, Rayne, and Skye each have a specific role in their operation, and the three of them have built something together that allows them to pursue their own version of justice.

The messy relationships. There are secrets and complicated relationships everywhere in this book, including both Stormi and Niles' romantic histories. Neither character is coming into this relationship without baggage.

The suspense. Once Stormi discovers Niles' connection to one of her targets, the romance becomes much more complicated. It creates a conflict between Stormi's personal feelings and the secret life she's built with her sisters.

My Rating

I gave Silent Surrender 4 stars, with 2/5 spice. What worked best for me was the combination of the romantic suspense, deeply layered characters, and the complicated relationship between Stormi and Niles. I also loved Stormi as a heroine and the whole vigilante operation she runs with her sisters.

In terms of spice, there are several intimate scenes throughout the book, but they're not particularly graphic or in-depth, so I'd put this firmly in the 2/5 spice range.

Final Thoughts

If you like your romance with a darker edge, complicated characters, secrets, and a healthy amount of drama, Silent Surrender is definitely worth checking out. The combination of the romantic suspense storyline and the vigilante operation made this feel different from a more typical romantic suspense, and I really enjoyed getting to know Stormi and watching her relationship with Niles unfold.

I also loved discovering a new-to-me Black female author with Silent Surrender. Netra Antoinette has created a story with a really interesting premise and a heroine who is far from your typical romance heroine, and I always love finding authors who aren't getting a ton of attention yet.
