⚠️ Content warnings: This one is dark. It includes sexual violence, a referenced suicide, homophobia, and some gore. Please check trigger warnings before you start.
What Are the Main Tropes?
Fallen Rook is a dark mafia romance with an enemies-to-lovers, forbidden dynamic. It pairs an FBI agent with the Camorra enforcer he’s been trying to put away, and one of its leads is closeted in a world where being out isn’t safe.
What Is It About?
Enzo is the enforcer for the Camorra. He’s also the life of the party: the funny class clown everyone goes to for a good time, and the only one in the family with social media, always posting thirst traps. But he’s always felt like the odd man out in his family, the “spare.” He’s also not out, and in the mafia world, homophobia runs deep, so he’s still trying to come to terms with his sexuality.
Tom is an FBI agent who has spent years trying to incarcerate Enzo and his brothers. He’s a shell of a person, emotionally unavailable since his former lover died by suicide, a loss he blames himself for.
Two men with heavy pasts, on opposite sides of the law, and a connection neither of them can walk away from.
What Did I Love?
The characters. Both Enzo and Tom are so well fleshed out that I felt like I knew them. Enzo is vivid on the page, and I could picture him so clearly.
The angst. The tension comes from how tortured both leads are, and I love when a book breaks my heart a little and then puts it back together. This one did exactly that.
The humor. There are so many lines that made me crack up. I’ve read almost LJ Shen’s whole catalog, and this might be her wittiest book yet. It’s part of what makes the heavy moments hit harder.
The spice. It’s dirty but so hot. I don’t know if every MM book is like this, but it was some of the best spice I’ve ever read. Parts of this book were hilarious, parts were heartwrenching, parts were romantic, and parts were just plain scorching. It’s layered in the best way.
How LJ handles the hard stuff. The first time Enzo and Tom are intimate is hard to read, so please check your triggers. I thought LJ handled it so well. Enzo’s response afterward, how it’s named as sexual violence, and Tom’s remorse and ownership of his cruel actions all felt honest and earned.
What Didn’t Work?
I loved this book, truly. That said, a few things made me a bit uncomfortable, which is a feeling I enjoy and one I expect from LJ’s books. Here’s what stood out:
It’s very dark, and a couple of parts are gory. It’s no more so than Bad Bishop, but it was almost too much for me at times.
The spitting and a few of the spicier moments felt more gross than hot. I admittedly like when authors stretch me to discomfort, especially once I’ve had time to sit with it.

Final Thoughts
Funny, angsty, heartbreaking, and scorching, with two leads I’m completely in love with. I couldn’t put it down and finished it in one sitting. It may be my favorite LJ Shen book yet, though I need to reread Handsome Devil to be sure.
If you love dark mafia romance, even if you’ve never picked up an MM book before (like me), Fallen Rook is definitely one to check out.
